Bob Hardy training for full Ottawa marathon

Walker-runner Bob Hardy is currently training for the Ottawa, full (42.2-km) marathon and he is extending an invitation to people to join him for his next 30-km time trial. The 30-km time trials are a very important part of his marathon training, he says.

His next 30-km time trial will be on Wednesday, March 21 at the Tim Horton’s Dome in Alexandria. He starts at 1 p.m. and finishes around 5 p.m. He has other runners and race-walkers join him for part of the 30 kilometres. No one has ever completed it, he says.

His last 30-km time trial was on February 23. The time was 3 hrs, 26 min 19 sec.

Robert “Bob” Hardy,  calls himself a Walker-Runner. He says he took up walker racing when health issues meant he could no longer ride a bicycle due to balance issues.

At age 67, he is going faster than ever.

He is racing his third Ottawa Marathon on May 27, 2018; his goal is 5hr, 15 min., which is 48 minutes faster than in 2017, when his time was 24 minutes, 22 seconds faster than 2016.

Hardy says he will be able to beat his previous time because he has improved his walker racing technique, his breathing, his nutrition, and he has optimized his racing equipment and started early with inside winter training at the Tim Horton’s Dome in Alexandria.

Here are some of his results:   2018  Personal best “inside the dome” times to date.

2018:  10-km: 1 hr, 3min, 33 sec.      2017.  1 hr, 4 min, 8 sec.

2018:  16-km: 1 hr, 49 min, 4 sec.     2017.  1 hr. 57 min, 42 sec  –

2018:  20-km: 2 hr, 19 min, 23 sec.   2017.  2 hr. 26 min, 4 sec

2018:  30-km: 3 hr, 26 min, 19 sec.   2017 3 hrs, 38 min.

His strategy for the marathon is to maintain a speed of 7 minutes per km. He is allowing 15 minutes for unexpected emergencies and doesn’t want to “hit the wall” as he did in 2017.

Another upcoming race takes place on April 28 in Cornwall; that one is called the Run to End MS and is a 10-kilomtre race.

“Race walking is an Olympic sport, walker racing is not  . . . yet,” says Hardy.

My name is Robert “Bob” Hardy, The Walker Runner.  I race a walker because I lost my balance after blood clots and surgeries and could no longer race a bicycle.

2017 was my most successful racing year, At 67 I am stronger, fitter, faster and 20lbs lighter than 2013 when I started Walker Racing.

My second full (42.2-km) Marathon. Ottawa Marathon, Time 6.03.58. Sports Stats.ca.  24 minutes and 22 seconds faster than 2016

August 20th.   Demi-Marathon de Lachine. My best ever half marathon time. 2.33.50. Jikko Results.  6 minutes, 15 seconds faster than my previous best 2017 MS, Cornwall Half Marathon.

September 23rd.The very hot and crowded Montreal Rock’n Roll Half Marathon. My most memorable half-marathon. I finished overall 10,076 out of 18,644 in a time of 2.41.26. Jikko results,  despite some cobble stone roads and crowded streets from start to finish

September 30:  Community Running, Alexandria. My Grand Finale with a 10-km Race Walk (with some running) in 1 hr, 4 minutes and 8 seconds, 9 minutes,39 seconds faster than my last best 10-km in May 2015.

My “oh dear” races.  June 17: Pointe Claire Half-Marathon.   2.49.42  Three weeks after the Ottawa Marathon with a virus and antibiotics  September 17: Army Run Ottawa Half-Marathon.  2.45.37 . Needed medical assistance after the race was over. Lack of hydration. Long story.

The 2017 Lachine/Bonneville Half Marathon

Lachine/Bonneville Half Marathon. August 20th. I did it again, broke my own personal Half Marathon (21.1-km), Walker Racing record by 6 minutes and 14 seconds. Official time of 2.33.51 Stats by Jikko.ca Summary: Six minutes, 9 seconds faster than my previous personal best half marathon time of 2.40.05 recorded at MS, Cornwall 29th April 2017and 16 minutes, 23 seconds faster than my 2014, very first Demi-marathon Bonneville de Lachine time of 2.48.14 on the 24th August 2014. My next Half Marathon race, The Army Run, Ottawa, September 17th. One week later The Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon on September  24th. I had lots of support thanks to CBC Home Run Interview on Friday and Face Book post on Sunday morning. Lots of cheering and shouting “You are our, or my Inspiration” What Inspired me? There was one other Walker Racer competing in the 1-km, racing a red HUGO Elite Rolattor, walker. His girl friend was Walker Racing a wheel chair. Holding onto the handle and walking at the side of the wheel chair. I was watching and cheering them on.
